I like to stick to the basics when I am writing a tutorial so I go over each step very carefully.
Nothing makes me crazier than to be half way through a tutorial and not know what to do.
So read on and enjoy yourself. If it’s not fun, what’s the point?
You have probably seen some great patterns out there on the internet. Ever wonder how to make them for yourself? Well it turns out it’s not much harder than making your own Photoshop brushes. Now of course if you have never made your own Photoshop brushes, you can click over to my tutorial, How to make your own Custom Photoshop Brushes. Check out the textures while you are there.
This tutorial is being written with the assumption that you have a basic understanding of Photoshop.
The main difference between making brushes and making patterns is that patterns can be in color. You do not have to convert your pattern to Grayscale before you can use it. You can make some very basic patterns and then you can make some really complicated patterns. Today we will go over how to make some of the easier patterns.
Here is the image I am going to use to make our first pattern
If you would like to use this image, you can get it Get it here!
This image is about 3×3 inches in size and 240 pixels per inch. You can start with the image the size you want it or resize it later. So all this image is, is a simple red dot image with a white background.
This is where the magic happens. Go to EDIT> DEFINE PATTERN,
When you click the button this box will appear,
Name it whatever you want.
Now to use your new pattern, First go to FILE> NEW.
When you click on it, this box will show up.
Fill it out with these numbers. Depending on what you are going to use the pattern for will determine how large to make your new canvas. Click OK.
Now you can go to EDIT> FILL,
and this box will appear. You are first going to click the little arrows next to the box that says USE.
When this box drops down,
Choose “pattern” and click OK. You will then see this box.
Choose your new pattern using the arrows next to the CUSTOM PATTERN box and this box will appear.
It should be the last one in the box. Now click OK.
The canvas you just made will fill up with your new pattern.
Pretty cool huh. And this is only the beginning. Over the next few tutorials I will show you how to take this simple action and build cooler and even cooler patterns, like these,
And if you want you can try your hand at this.
Thanks for visiting,
If you want to try your hand at something more difficult, here is the next tutorial for patterns.
